Tackling life's biggest questions.

Is there a God? What is the nature of reality? How, then, should we live? Can we know the truth to these questions? If so, what is it? These are some of the questions we address on The Don Johnson Radio Show.

We examine these topics in the context of current affairs and we talk respectfully with members of all worldviews in an effort to get people to think deeply about what they believe and why.

Listed at right are the full archives of the Don Johnson Radio Show.

On "Helpful" Sins, Hell and God's Purpose for Your Life

Listener Tomer didn't like the way we responded to his email on the air a few shows back, so we got him on the line to talk about it. The conversation touched on a wide range of topics, including:

  • There are certain sins that seem to be very beneficial. Shouldn't we practice those in order to achieve a greater good?
  • If our good works outweigh our bad, shouldn't that be enough to get into Heaven?
  • Why does God seem like such a harsh taskmaster? He gives us desires and then punishes us for trying to fulfill them? And is it really a relationship if he holds hell over our heads as punishment if we don't submit to his rules?

Examining the Worldview of The Secret:

An Interview with Kathleen Graham

Don and Brandon interview personal success coach Kathleen Graham, founder and president of Success In U. Kathleen teaches people how to  appropriate the teachings of The Secret using techniques explained in her written guide, The Law of Attraction Toolkit.

Kathleen graciously explains her beliefs and candidly answers some questions from Don and Brandon regarding some of the more troubling worldview teachings of The Secret, such as:

  • Victims of genocide are guilty, at some level, of bringing it upon themselves.
  • There is no objective right and wrong in the universe, so Hitler cannot be morally condemned. We can only point out that the Allies knew how to harness the power of The Secret better than he did.

They also discuss the compatibly of the teachings of The Secret with those of Jesus (Don and Brandon see them as antithetical, Kathleen doesn't) and talk about about whether or not the worldview of The Secret is self-refuting and incoherent. It turns out to be a very interesting conversation.

Is There Any Good Reason to Be a Mormon?: A Discussion with LDS Scholar Alma Allred

  • I write often on my blog about how I think Mormonism is a religion that offers no good reasons to support its truth claims. Most recently I noted an example of this: recent DNA findings that suggested some historical inaccuracies in the Book of Mormon have been deemed largely irrelevant within Mormon Church circles. Alma Allred commented on that post, disagreeing with my assessment. I contacted him and he agreed to chat with me about this topic on my radio show.

Mr. Allred is a university administrator at the University of Utah and an LDS Historian. He teaches LDS Church History at the LDS Institute of Religion located near the University of Utah. He is a published author and has provided book reviews for the Mormon History Association and the Foundation for Ancient Research and Mormon Studies. Most recently, he was one of the essayists in a book published by the University of Illinois Press, "Black and Mormon" edited by Newell Bringhurst and Darron Smith. (2004)
